Take the plunge – Expect a miracle

It all started with a silly picture and before I knew it, I was invited to be part of the Business Bloggers Mastermind Group that Tea Silvestre (of Story Bistro) facilitates. A couple of hours after that, I attended my first meeting and before the night was over, I’d committed to writing a blog post every week -- for eight weeks -- and have it reviewed by the group. Had I just lost my mind?  It’s possible, but not because I joined the group. I’d better start from the beginning. A few days before joining the Bloggers Mastermind, I’d discovered Téa’s website and blog and loved what sh...

Being Authentically You!

How to get past self-doubt and know that you're enough. “Come to think,” he said,” I’m not sure what success looks like. And, the truth is, even if I got what I say I want, I still wouldn’t feel successful.” "Mark" and I -- OK, his name isn’t Mark but the dialogue is true and I do like that name -- have known each other for a long time. His words that day weren’t a surprise. It was the way he looked at me that was different. He was opening the door to a conversation about something he’s always been sensitive about. “What’s going on?” I asked. “Well,” he replied, “I’ve been working with...

Running in place – getting nowhere fast

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with two entrepreneurs. They've both been dealing with major career and life transition for some time now. One was let go due to downsizing, about a year ago. The other chose to leave the organization he worked for, after many years of service. They are both highly skillful, experienced and knowledgeable. Along the way, they both decided to go to business for themselves. They chose to start businessses right along the lines of what they had always done. Gradually, the challenge of playing multiple roles within their young businesses, began to take a ...

Cultivating self-respect!

During my Daily Habits teleclass today, I had the chance to observe, once again, wisdom in action. People shared the challenges and dilemmas they face when it comes to self-care. They jumped in to support one another and in doing so, they proved how wise, knowing, willing and generous they are  . . . when it comes to others. It's not that we don't know how to exercise self-care, we just don't do it. Somewhere along the way, pushing our needs in the back burner, became a life forming habit! It got me thinking about respect. What does it mean to have respect for someone or something? What ...

Liar Liar Pants on Fire!

The girls and I were looking at upcoming movie ads in the paper one day, when one of them turned to me and said: "Now, mom, this movie here is supposed to be number one but here is another one and another one. How many movies exactly are number one this season?" Ha? From the mouths of babes . . . although, please don't let my daughters know I called them this way. We went ahead to have a conversation about advertising and marketing and how misleading ads can be. Then, I sat down to write this. How many number one movies can there be, how many "Best" cars or "Best ever?" whatever? These day...

Missing Opportunities?

When do we know we're playing hide-and-go-seek with success? Can it be when we don't take the time (because who has time for trivia anyway?) to spell it out for ourselves? Do we know what a successful business . . . a successful life look like? Or, is it, other people's beliefs of what success is, that define us? What is success? How does it look, smell, feel? How is success measured in your work, in your life, or is it possible to keep the two separate? "Good questions but guess what . . .  I got to go now." "Got to surf the net, check on what other people are saying on Twitter,...

Keeping it Light!

Q. Although, I have no problem of speaking about "what I do," I am conscious of not cornering people with the hard sell- therefore I feel I may miss opportunities. How do I maintain a balance between being "authentic" and marketing effectively? What a great question! Those of us who face this dilemma, raise your hands! There are many ways to approach this and just by looking at how many books are written on the subject, we can easily say it's a common struggle. Let's begin by accepting the simple fact that being ourselves is much easier than trying to be someone else. It's important to kno...

Speaking of Priorities; What Really Matters

For over ten years I have had the opportunity to work with people who live their lives under the weight of personal responsibility and professional obligation and find themselves wishing they could find a way to stop the frenetic pace of their lives. The belief system that permeates our society is that somehow we can have it all and if only we apply ourselves, we can achieve anything we want. There is nothing wrong with these beliefs as long as they are kept in perspective. What we don't seem able or willing to understand is that there are only twenty-four hours in a day, seven days in a wee...

Life Lessons My Garden Taught Me

It snowed today - a lot! The storm picked up momentum as the day went on. I found myself drawn to the window often. I couldn't see the garden. I know there is life there - under the thick blanket of snow. The garden has already started preparing for its showy comeback. We are getting close now. Gardening is one of the ways I express myself creatively. I grew up watching my grandfather growing roses, tending grapes and fruit trees. In the summer, he used to wake me up early in the morning to go pick up figs for breakfast. At noon, the children used to lie down, in the shade of this huge fig ...

Staying healthy in stressful times

Is what's going on with the economy keeping you up at night? Are you worried and stressed? Given all that's happening, you are not alone. People who don't have good self-care habits to begin with, find it almost impossible to take care of themselves at times of extreme stress. Health matters. Living with stress, not sleeping or eating well, not exercising, and always focusing on the negative will not make you more effective or solve your problems. As you are reading this, take a deep breath and scan your body. Feel how the stress is affecting you. Where in your body do you hold the stres...
